I’m thrilled to host Suzanne Woods Fisher who writes amazing Amish fiction… and seriously, who doesn’t love a bad boy hero? Hereā€™s a brief summary of her newest release, Mending Fences: Bad boy Luke Schrock has returned to Stoney Ridge after a stint in rehab and finds a cold welcome. Everybody forgives him but nobody trusts him. Izzy Miller, beautiful and aloof, is particularly immune to Lukeā€™s charms, until he offers her the one thing she canā€™t refuse.

An Amish Bad Boy,Ā by Suzanne Woods Fisher

In Mending Fences, bad boy Luke Schrock is one of those charming-but-irresponsible guys whoā€™s hard to stay mad at. Heā€™s also fresh out of a stint (or two) in rehab, trying to find his footing back in Stoney Ridge.

Sounds kinda farfetched? Not as far as you might think.

It might surprise you to think thereā€™s a need among the Amish for a drug and rehab facility or, frankly, any kind of support for mental health organization. After all, the Amish are known for stable families, nestled in supportive communities. Their divorce rate is virtually zero; their rates of depression, of cancer, of addiction, of mental illness are much lower than the national average.

And yetā€¦no one is immune to troubles, not even the Amish.

Over the last decade, rehab and mental health facilities have sprung up near Mennonite and Amish communities, equipped with counselors who speak Penn Dutch. Faith-based rehabs treat the physical problem and the psychological aspect of it, but they add another variableā€”they heal a personā€™s spirit, too.

So thatā€™s where the idea for Luke Schrockā€™s story got started. Luke might be clean and sober, but he still has some work to do. Bishop David Stoltzfus believes the only way Luke will become whole and healthy is to return to the church community, face each person heā€™s harmed and take the time to listen to their side of the story. One by one.

Ouch. Can you imagine what that must have felt like? Not easy! But so impactful.

And then Luke has a significant ā€œahaā€ moment, in which a beautiful young woman named Izzy Miller holds up a mirror to him andā€¦ Hold on. I donā€™t want to spoil the story for you. I want you to read Mending Fences for yourself. It has a message that belongs to us all.

Suzanne Woods Fisher writes stories that take you to places youā€™ve never visitedā€”one with characters that seem like old friends. But most of all, her books give you something to think about long after youā€™ve finished reading it. With over one million copies of her books sold worldwide, Suzanne is the best-selling author of more than thirty books, ranging from non-fiction books, to childrenā€™s books, to novels. She lives with her very big family in northern California.

I used to live in Amish country. It really does NOT surprise me that they would need rehab like the rest of the population. After living around them you come to realize that they’re not so different than us. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, and their journeys of faith are just as individual as ours.
