I’m so excited to host Patricia Bradley. Pat and I both live in Mississippi and both have written novels set in our great state, so we are kindred spirits. A few years ago, we participated in a whirlwind weekend book tour down in the heart of Mississippi. When we weren’t greeting fans, we talked non-stop for two days! Here’s a summary of Patricia’s latest novel Justice Buried: When security consultant Kelsey Allen’s’ investigative focus turns from theft to murder, Kelsey knows she’s out of her league–and possibly in the cross hairs of a murderer. When blast-from-the-past Detective Brad Hollister is called in to investigate, Kelsey may find that he’s the biggest security threat yet . . . to her heart.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE AS A WRITER, by Patricia Bradley

A typical day in my life as a writer, from rising to sleep…

At precisely 5:04 a.m., my alarm goes off—not wawawa, but Michael Card singing “Be Thou My Vision”. It kind of sets the tone for the day. And five-oh-four because…well, I just can’t imagine getting up one minute earlier.

Suzy, Looking Regal and Relaxed and begging for breakfast!

Before I turn the alarm off, I have to move Suzy, my rescue kitty. At four each morning, she wants to curl up on my chest and sleep for an hour. Once I’m up and take care of the usual morning things, I get back in bed and do my stretches. Leg stretches and shoulder stretches—with her back on my chest. Then I stagger to the kitchen where Suzy stares at me until I feed her—usually while my coffee is brewing. Liquid from Mount Olympus. With my Yeti in my hand I stagger back to my office and write a nifty 350 (as James Scott Bell calls it). The 350 usually turns into 500 words before I break for breakfast and my quiet time.

By now my body is crying for a nap. Usually I let it cry—deadlines don’t get met napping. After my quiet time, I’m back at the computer again, trying my best to ignore the clutter about to bury me. But there’s no time to straighten anything up. I always have a deadline breathing down my neck.

I know I should get up and walk around for a few minutes every hour, but I have a daily work count of 2,000 words. So, you’ll find me chained to my computer until I hit it, which means I usually eat lunch at my desk. But then it’s fun time…Tuesdays and Thursdays you will find me sweating through Pilates for an hour. The rest of the week I’ll be sweating in the pool…and yes, you do sweat in the pool.

By five thirty I’m burning making dinner for the guy I’ve been dating for eighteen years. Yeah, you read right and no, we’re not getting married. I’d have to give up control of the remote. My guy friend stays until 7:30ish and if I haven’t met my count, I work until I do, usually getting to bed by ten. Five-oh-four the next morning, my alarm goes off…

And that is a typical day in my writing life.

Thank you for the opportunity to win a book! I am not certain that the link subscribed me to your newsletter, but I hope it did.

Betty, if you entered your email address and first name in the Subscribe field in the sidebar on the left and hit subscribe, then you’re good to go. If you try again, and you’re already subscribed, you’ll receive a message letting you know that you’re already subscribed, so you’ll know for sure that it went through the first time. 🙂

    1. Pam

And thank you for being a reader and going through the hunt with us. I’m having a blast. Hope you are too. 🙂

  2. Pat Moore

Liked & followed on FB & Goodreads. I signed up for all the author’s emails on the first entry. Hope that works. I guess I’m a morning person. I’m usually awake and up by 4 or 5 AM

    1. Pam

Thank you, Pat! So glad you’re having fun on the Scavenger hunt. Sounds like you and the other Pat can keep each other company at 5 am, yes? 🙂

  3. Debora Wilder

I can attest to the fact that you can sweat in the pool. The only place I’m able to exercise in the warm therapy pool at the gym. I do a water aerobics class 3 days a week. Our teacher works us hard! I loved learning about Patricia’s day. Thanks for the chance to win one of your books Pam.

    1. Pam

Debora, so glad you stopped by. Water aerobics sounds like a great way to get some exercise in. Enjoy the rest of the hunt!

  4. Jeanne Crea

Thank you so much for the chance to win! I’ve been enjoying your cowboy quotes on twitter 🙂

    1. Pam

Thank you, Jeanne. Aren’t those quotes a hoot? I’ve noticed in my research that the mid-to-late 1800s is rife with new words, mangled words, a gazillion different ways to say the same thing. I’ve found it harder to find a substitute for some words while writing my 1790s historicals, but then there are some interesting turns of phrase in that time period as well. 🙂

      Enjoy the hunt!

So glad you enjoyed it, Brenda. Lisa Bergren had this hunt so organized… all I did was follow her amazing instructions. I love how easy it is for you guys to move from one stop the next, gathering clues, learning about new authors and having fun along the way.

  5. Cathy

By the way, I use a different email for newsletters than for other contacts, but I didn’t find any method to indicate that in the Rafflecopter form. Sometimes they say to input the address with which you are receiving the newsletters. Fun posts/contest!

    1. Pam

No problem, Cathy! I do the same thing with my email accounts. Keeps things nice and tidy, doesn’t it? I’m sure I’ll figure it out. So glad to have you participating in the hunt with us.

  6. Beth Erin

Hi Pam! I’m already subscribed and following you 🙂 I look forward to the hunt every year even if it’s just to drop by and read about all my favorites!

  7. Alaina F

Release the hounds, I’m on the hunt for Day 2!

  8. Paula Shreckhise

I loved Pam’s book Promise of Breeze Hill and would like to read more!
I get Pat’s blog and love the blotter reports and guessing which one is true or false. I also love Pat’s books! I already have several I need to read on my stack!

  9. Barbara Hamby

Patricia, 5:04 am seems like an odd hour, but if it works for you, why not? 🙂 I love learning more about “my” authors and the behind the scenes glimpse into what goes into writing those fabulous stories!

Pam, thank you for participating in the hunt, I look forward to this every year. And for the bonus giveaway!

  12. Lisa Hudson

Loved reading about Patricia’s day! Patricia is one of my favorite authors! Love to read books by a fellow Mississippi Girl!

    1. Patricia Bradley

Thanks, Lisa. I’d love to get together with all my Mississippi readers! And actually, I’m going to be in Mendenhall, MS, on April the 11th at the Mendenhall Library. Would love it if you could make it.

  13. Alison Boss

Pam, I subscribed to your newsletter and am following you now on FB, Goodreads, Twitter and Pinterest. 🙂 Thank you for the bonus chance to win a book!!

Patricia, it was fun getting to know more about you. You are a new author to me. That’s one of the awesome things about doing the CFSH…..learning about new authors and getting new info on authors we know and love.

Thank you both, Pam and Patricia, for participating in this year’s CFSH! It’s so much fun and I look forward to it every year!! 🙂
